In the Women’s Asia Cup 2024, Bangladesh defeated Malaysia with a resounding 114 runs. This decisive victory not only demonstrated Bangladesh’s strong form but also set up the much awaited semifinal matchup with India on July 26.
Bangladesh’s top-order batswomen, who chose to bat first, set the tone on Wednesday with a brilliant display. Murshida Khatun displayed both power and skill in her brilliant innings, scoring 80 runs off of 59 balls. Her innings, full of boundaries and executed with such perfect technique, laid the foundation for Bangladesh’s formidable score of 191/2 in their 20 overs.
Along with his major contribution, captain Nigar Sultana led the innings with an undefeated 62 off 45 balls. Her cool-headed and tactical batting made sure Bangladesh scored a huge total.
The only bowlers from Malaysia who managed to stop the run-scoring were Elsa Hunter and Mahirah Izzati Ismail, who each took one wicket. In general, the Malaysian offence was ineffectual against the aggressive Bangladeshi hitters, who took advantage of every chance to score without restriction.
In reply, Bangladesh’s methodical bowling assault applied constant pressure, ruining Malaysia’s chase. The most impressive bowler was Nahida Akter, who took two wickets for just thirteen runs. She had excellent help from Rabeya Khan, who took one wicket for ten runs.
The pair destroyed the Malaysian batting order, which found it difficult to form partnerships and was reduced to 77 runs in 20 overs with 8 wickets lost.
With a meagre 20 runs, Elsa Hunter was the top scorer for Malaysia; however, her effort was not enough to withstand the relentless bowling of Bangladesh. As a result of the other batsmen’s mistakes and wasted opportunities, Malaysia’s innings was marked by a string of poor decisions.
Bangladesh is now a serious contender for the forthcoming semifinal match against India thanks to their impressive all-around performance, which included powerful batting and accurate, disciplined bowling. As the two sides square up in what looks to be an exciting match, fans can expect an explosive battle.
