Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge respectively congratulated the Indian men’s and women’s teams on their historic gold medal victories at the 2024 Chess Olympiad in Budapest on Sunday.
“History is created! Cheers to Team India for winning their first-ever gold medal in the Chess Olympiad in the Open Section! India has won its rightful spot on the podium thanks to the extraordinary skill, strategic brilliance, and unshakeable dedication of Gukesh Dommaraju, Arjun Erigaisi, Vidit Gujrathi, Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, Pentala Harikrishna, and Srinath Narayanan, Kharge wrote on X.
“Your golden victory has made the people of the country proud!” The seasoned Congressman said, “May your accomplishment inspire future generations of Indian chess players.”
The Indian men’s team defeated Slovenia in the final round in Budapest, securing the gold medal because to the outstanding efforts of D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi.
Throughout the competition, the Indian team performed admirably, winning eight straight games until being held to a tie by Uzbekistan, the reigning champions. They did, however, recover well, defeating the United States in the penultimate round as the top-seeded team. In their last match, they triumphed over Slovenia, while China, in second position, conceded points on two boards to the United States.
India’s women’s team achieved a commensurate feat to accompany their success in the men’s division. In their respective open section competitions, the Indian women’s team, which included Abhijit Kunte, Vantika Agrawal, Tania Sachdev, Divya Deshmukh, Harika Dronavalli, and Vaishali Rameshbabu, also won gold.
