As the September 15 deadline approaches, the Income Tax Department announced Monday that more than 7 crore income tax returns (ITRs) have already been filed for the Assessment Year (AY) 2025–2026.
The Department praised taxpayers and tax experts for helping reach this milestone in a post on social networking platform X, and encouraged anyone who hasn’t filed their forms yet to do so as soon as possible.
“To far, over 7 crore ITRs have been filed, and the number is continually growing. We thank taxpayers and tax experts for helping us achieve this milestone, and we encourage everyone who hasn’t filed their ITR for AY 2025–2026 to do so,” the statement read.
Additionally, the Department advised taxpayers that assistance is accessible 24/7 for filing returns, paying taxes, and accessing other associated services.
“We provide support via calls, live chats, WebEx sessions, and Twitter/X, and our helpdesk operates around the clock,” it continued.
The explanation was made one day after the Department denied reports that the deadline will be extended once further.
It reiterated that September 15 is still the deadline and called claims that the deadline would be moved to September 30 “fake news” on Sunday.
The Department stated on Sunday that there is a false report circulating that the deadline for filing ITRs, which was originally set for July 31, 2025, but was extended to September 15, 2025, has been extended to September 30, 2025.
“ITR submission is still due on September 15, 2025. The Department said, “Taxpayers should only rely on official @IncomeTaxIndia updates.”
The administration had already moved the non-audit case deadline for AY 2025–2026 from July 31 to September 15 earlier in May.
According to the Department, the increase in ITR submissions is a reflection of both the country’s growing taxpayer base and improved tax compliance.
