India records the highest ever coal production in 2023-24, focussing on increasing coking coal output

According to the Coal Ministry’s year-end evaluation, India produced its highest ever coal production of 997.826 million tonnes (MT) in fiscal year 2023-24, an 11.71 percent rise over the similar figure of 893.191 MT in fiscal year 2022-23.

During the calendar year 2024 (until December 15, 2024), the country delivered around 963.11 MT of coal, compared to approximately 904.61 MT of coal during the same period prior year, representing a 6.47 percent increase. This included 792.958 MT of coal supplied to the Power Sector, up from 755.029 MT coal in the same time last year, or a 5.02 percent increase.

The coal supply to the non-regulated sector in the calendar year was 171.236 MT, up from 149.573 MT in the same period last year, representing a 14.48 percent increase. The Ministry of Coal has initiated ‘Mission Coking Coal’ to increase local coking coal output and minimise imports of coking coal, taking into account the steel sector’s demand projections. This mission intends to boost domestic raw coking coal production to 140 MT by fiscal year 2029-30.

Domestic raw coking coal output totalled 66.821 million tonnes (MT) in 2023-24, with a target of 77 MT for 2024-25. The target for raw coking coal production from CIL subsidiaries by FY2029-30 is approximately 105 MT, up from 60.43 MT in FY 2023-24.

Modernisation and renovation of existing old Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) and Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) washeries that have outlived their intended lifespans in order to maximise their utilisation and provide additional high-quality coal to the country.

Supply of coal to the steel sector via the Non-Regulated Sector (NRS) Linkage auction method to encourage domestic coking coal for steel production, as well as improvements to the auction procedure aimed at substituting coking coal imports, are also being implemented. The Ministry of Coal recently auctioned off 14 coking coal blocks to the private sector. These blocks are projected to begin production in 2028-29.
