MoS Margherita meets with Ecuador’s foreign minister and talks about deepening bilateral relations

During his official visit to Ecuador, Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita met with Gabriela Sommerfeld, the country’s Minister of Foreign and Human Mobility Affairs.

In addition to other areas of mutual interest, both sides looked into ways to strengthen their collaboration in the fields of politics, commerce, medicines, training, and capacity building. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on collaboration between Ecuador’s and India’s diplomatic training schools was signed by the two leaders during the meeting.

The MoS and Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld jointly opened the Indian Embassy in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, on Wednesday, demonstrating India’s dedication to deepening its relationship with Ecuador.

“Honored and delighted to jointly inaugurate the resident Embassy of India in Quito with Gabriela Sommerfeld, Foreign Minister of Ecuador,” Margherita posted on X. This signifies a new phase in our bilateral ties and underlines India’s determination to strengthen its engagement with Ecuador.

Additionally, Margherita spoke with members of the Ecuadorian business community about strategies to strengthen bilateral trade relations between Ecuador and India.

“Happy to meet business community members from Ecuador. Margherita said on X, “Had a good discussion on strengthening engagements between business communities to deepen bilateral trade.”

On Tuesday, the MoS made his first trip to Quito, a country in Latin America. The trip to Ecuador is the first stop on Margherita’s formal tour, which will take place from November 4–10 in three Latin American and Caribbean nations: Ecuador, Bolivia, and Cuba.

A statement released by the MEA prior to his visit stated, “This visit of MoS for External Affairs and Textiles is envisaged to continue the momentum of our political engagements with Ecuador, Bolivia, and Cuba, and boost India’s longstanding and friendly relations with these countries, reflecting mutual commitment to South-South cooperation and development.”
