On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin a special discussion in the Lok Sabha to commemorate the 150th anniversary of “Vande Mataram.” This exercise is expected to highlight a number of lesser-known aspects of the patriotic hymn.

PM Modi is also likely to emphasize the song’s historical significance, current relevance, and contribution to the freedom movement. The song was penned by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee and was originally published in the literary journal Bangadarshan on November 7, 1875.

The Opposition members eagerly anticipate PM Modi’s opinions on Vande Mataram. Last month, at a celebration of the song’s anniversary, he accused the Congress of “removing important stanzas” from the original anthem during the party’s 1937 session in Faizabad.

According to PM Modi, the Congress’s move broke the national anthem and planted the seeds of Partition. However, the Congress asserted that the ruling was based on Rabindranath Tagore’s advise and amounted to accommodating members’ sentiments from different ethnicities and religions.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to start the Rajya Sabha’s discussion on Vande Mataram on Tuesday.

The ruling NDA MPs have been given three of the ten hours available in the Lok Sabha for the Vande Mataram debate, according to the timetable.

Just before the Winter Session began, a political dispute broke out when the Rajya Sabha Secretariat reaffirmed that MPs should not use phrases like “Vande Mataram” and “Jai Hind” inside Parliament in order to preserve decorum.

The BJP-led NDA was accused by the opposition of feeling uneasy around symbols of India’s unity and independence.

Due to disagreements between the opposition and treasury benches on the song, the debate over “Vande Mataram” is expected to be heated in the days ahead to the Winter Session of Parliament, which is set to last until December 19.
