President Murmu offers condolences after the horrific incident at New Delhi Railway Station

President Droupadi Murmu expressed her sincere condolences on Sunday to the families who lost loved ones in a horrific disaster at New Delhi Railway Station.

At least 15 people were killed and numerous others injured in the mayhem that ensued on Saturday night as tourists hurried to catch trains to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh.

President Murmu expressed her deep sadness in a post on X, writing, “Deeply grieved to learn of the deaths in a stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. I send my heartfelt condolences to the lost families and wish for the fast recovery of those injured.”

The stampede began around 8 p.m. on platforms 14 and 15 of the station, as a large crowd of pilgrims attempted to board trains to the holy city of Prayagraj.

The scenario became increasingly tumultuous as the throng grew, culminating in the terrible occurrence.

According to officials from the LNJP Hospital, at least 15 individuals died.

In response to the event, the Delhi Police and Railway Protection Force (RPF) were swiftly dispatched to restore order. Fire engines were also dispatched to the scene.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the people in a post on X that the matter was under control. He also mentioned that injured passengers had been sent to local hospitals, and that special trains were being deployed to handle the massive influx of travellers.

In a post on X, the Northern Railway stated, “The heavy rush situation at New Delhi Station is under control.” Delhi Police and RPF arrived. The injured have been taken to the hospital. Special trains are being used to evacuate a sudden surge.”

Meanwhile, a police official was cited as stating, “When the Prayagraj Express arrived at platform number 14, there were many people there. The Swatatantra Senani Express and Bhubaneswar Rajdhani (both of which pass through Prayagraj) were delayed, and passengers from both trains could be found on platforms 12, 13, and 14.

As the Mahakumbh holiday draws to a close (February 26), special trains run by the Railways have been packed with people.
