On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will start a two-day trip to Assam, Manipur, and Mizoram, where he will officially launch a number of development initiatives.
According to officials, the prime minister would first travel to the capital of Mizoram to officially open the 51.38-kilometer Bairabi-Sairang railway project. This would make Aizawl the fourth Northeastern capital city to be connected by rail, following Guwahati, Agartala, and Itanagar.
Along with a few central ministers, PM Modi will officially open three new train service pairs that will connect Aizawl with Delhi, Guwahati, and Kolkata. He will also speak at public events. The three trains are the Guwahati-Sairang-Guwahati Express (daily), the Kolkata-Sairang-Kolkata Express (tri-weekly), and the Rajdhani Express (weekly) between Sairang and Anand Vihar (Delhi).
The Prime Minister will make his first trip to Manipur since ethnic unrest began in May 2023, departing from Aizawl.
He will speak at public gatherings in Imphal and Churachandpur. From the two locations, PM Modi will unveil projects worth Rs 8,500 crore. From the Peace Ground in Churachandpur, where the bulk of the population is Kuki-Zo tribal, he will lay the foundation stones for a number of development projects valued at Rs 7,300 crore.
At a public meeting to be held at the historic Kangla Fort in Imphal, the prime minister will also officially launch a number of infrastructure projects valued at Rs 1,200 crore.
The Prime Minister is anticipated to meet with local MLAs, leaders, and civil society organizations in both Churachandpur and Imphal, according to the officials.
As part of his broader assessment of the security situation throughout Manipur, Lieutenant General Abhijit S. Pendharkar, General Officer Commanding of Spear Corps, conducted an extensive tour of Churachandpur and surrounding districts before to the Prime Minister’s arrival.
According to a defense official, the top Army officer assessed the security conditions in several districts, including the forward regions along the India-Myanmar border and the readiness of the forces in those districts.
Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February 13, four days after N. Biren Singh resigned as Chief Minister, following a protracted ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups.
The 60-member Manipur Assembly was placed under suspended animation with the implementation of President’s Rule, and it will remain in office until 2027.
Following his visit to Manipur, the Prime Minister would spend two days in Guwahati. The Prime Minister would visit Assam for two days from September 13 to 14, according to a previous statement made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
In addition to inaugurating the official celebrations on September 13 in Guwahati, PM Modi’s visit is focused on the centennial celebrations of the birth of cultural icon and Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika.
The prime minister will inaugurate projects totaling more than Rs 19,000 crore in Assam on Sunday, September 14.
With a total investment of Rs 567 crore for these healthcare facilities, PM Modi will lay the cornerstone for Darrang Medical College, a nursing school, and a GNM school in the Darrang district.
Additionally, at an estimated cost of Rs 7,000 crore, he would lay the foundation stone for the Narengi-Kuruwa bridge and the Guwahati Ring Road project, which would connect the districts of Kamrup and Darrang in Assam with Ri Bhoi in Meghalaya.
The PM will then depart for the Numaligarh refinery in the Golaghat district, where he will lay the foundation stone for the more than Rs 7,000 crore Petro Fluidized Catalytic Cracker Unit and inaugurate the recently built over Rs 5,000 crore bamboo-based ethanol plant, according to Guwahati officials.
