According to Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), India has already become a “solar superpower” as it strives to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030.

Stiell stated at a media gathering in the city on Saturday that, while other countries talk, “India takes action, prioritising sustainable growth and energy security”.

Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, India has emerged as a global leader in the battle against climate change.

At the ET NOW Global Business Summit 2025, Stiell highlighted India’s ambitious plans to create sustainable energy infrastructure, emphasising the importance of ensuring energy access while addressing climate change.

“Under PM Modi’s leadership, India is expanding clean energy, cutting carbon intensity, and driving a green economy,” the politician said.

India’s aim to reaching net-zero emissions is consistent with global targets, indicating its attention to sustainability.

“As global climate action intensifies, India is leading in sustainability, clean technology, and climate finance, positioning itself as a future clean energy superpower,” said the top UN official, adding that a stronger embrace of the global clean energy boom will boost India’s economic growth.

The UN climate chief also encouraged India to create an ambitious climate plan that encompasses the entire economy.

The country has already reached a historic milestone by exceeding 100 GW of installed solar power capacity, cementing its status as a global leader in renewable energy.

As of January 31, India’s total solar capacity installed was 100.33 GW, with 84.10 GW under construction and another 47.49 GW under tender.

India’s energy journey over the past decade has been both momentous and uplifting. Solar panels, solar parks, and rooftop solar projects have resulted in revolutionary improvements.

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana makes rooftop solar a household reality and is a game changer in sustainable energy, providing clean power to every home. Launched in 2024, the plan is approaching 9 lakh rooftop solar systems, allowing households across the country to embrace renewable energy options.

Over the previous decade, the country’s solar power sector has increased capacity by 3,450 percent, from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 100 GW in 2025.
