Uttarakhand pays a poignant homage to fallen soldiers across districts on Kargil Vijay Diwas in 2025

In a solemn celebration of the 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas, Uttarakhand residents gathered on Saturday to pay tribute to the valiant soldiers who lost their lives in the 1999 Kargil War and to express their sincere gratitude.

Ex-servicemen, government representatives, and local residents offered floral tributes, honored the families of victims, and recounted moving memories of bravery and sacrifice during commemorative events conducted around the state, including Haldwani, Haridwar, Almora, and Mandi.

A moving homage to the Kargil War heroes was given at the Smriti Wall in Haldwani, where the spirit of patriotism reverberated throughout Shahid Park. The celebration, which was organized by the Sainik Welfare Centre, was attended by local residents, government representatives, and former service members.

The tributes were led by BJP politician Ajay Bhatt, who praised the Indian Army’s “indomitable courage and valour.”

“Our soldiers displayed unparalleled bravery in the face of adversity,” he said, recalling the difficult terrain and severe conditions that prevailed during the Kargil War. Their sacrifice preserved our country’s sovereignty. We applaud their commitment and extend our sincere appreciation to their families.

Many people attended the ceremony, including SSP, ADM, SP City, SDM, and other law enforcement personnel. In remembrance of the five soldiers from the Nainital district who lost their lives in the battle, they presented garlands and flowers to the martyrs’ portraits.

Later in the day, the families of the Kargil martyrs and Veer Naris (war widows) received congratulations at a special event held at the MBPG College Auditorium. As the tales of courage and sorrow were reverently narrated, the ritual evoked strong emotions in the audience.

The district government of Haridwar hosted a somber Shaurya Diwas celebration at Roshanabad’s Collectorate Bhawan. area Magistrate Mayur Dixit paid tribute to the martyrs, describing the martyr families’ attendance as “a moment of pride for the entire district.”

“Every Indian heart contains the spirit of Kargil,” Dixit stated.

“Our government is dedicated to helping the families of martyrs and former service members. We’re working hard to make sure these families can easily receive the advantages of many government programs. In Haridwar, a nodal officer has also been assigned to handle any issues or needs.

During the ceremony, veterans and their families received recognition for their longstanding contributions to the country’s defense. It served as a potent reminder of the enduring connection between the military and the general public.

When seven courageous troops from the district were honored for their martyrdom during the Kargil War, the memories of July 26, 1999, were vividly evoked in Almora. To commemorate the pivotal military operation, Operation Vijay, which drove out Pakistani forces and infiltrators from high-altitude positions and restored India’s territorial integrity, local leaders, veterans, and civilians congregated.

Captain Aditya Mishra (Ladakh Scouts), Paratrooper Ram Singh (10 Para), Sepoy Mohan Singh (2 Naga), Havildar Hari Singh Thapa (24 Commando Royal Engineers), Havildar Tam Bahadur Chhetri (1 Naga), Naik Hari Singh Gale (2 Naga), and Lance Naik Harish Singh (17 Garhwal) were among those honored. They all sacrificed their lives under the most trying circumstances on the battlefield.

Speaking at the Martyrs’ Day celebration, District Magistrate Alok Kumar Pandey said, “These courageous sons’ legacy will endure for generations to come. This land’s soil bears the imprint of their sacrifice.

Sainik Welfare Board representatives also emphasized the continued assistance given to martyrs’ families. In remembrance of those who lost their lives in 1999, social programs and financial assistance are still in place.

The 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas was celebrated in Mandi at the Shaheed Memorial in the Indira Market Complex, where a sizable contingent of former service members, the relatives of the martyrs, and locals gathered in a spirit of respect and solidarity.

Kargil Vijay Diwas is not just a day of remembrance, it is a call to action, a pledge to serve, and a tribute to the warriors who never returned,” said Lieutenant General Rakesh Kapoor, speaking to the crowd. The Indian Army changed the course of the conflict and reclaimed every square inch of Indian territory thanks to its tenacity and valor.

Additionally, the Mandi district honored its twelve martyrs, whose names will always be inscribed in the country’s history. As a sign of the great regard society has for their sacrifices, the gathering also honored Veer Naris, the families of martyrs, and former service members.

MLA Anil Sharma, MLA Indra Singh Gandhi, Mayor Virendra Bhatt, ADC Gursimar Singh, and Mandi BJP President Nihal Chand were among the notable dignitaries in attendance. ADC Singh led a mass pledge to defend India’s sovereignty as the ceremony came to a close.
