Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez has received praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his nation’s recognition of Ayurveda and integration of the age-old healing science into the public health system.
In a statement of their discussion on Sunday on the sidelines of the BRICS conference here, India’s External Affairs Ministry stated that he suggested that Cuba recognize Indian pharmacopoeia, which would allow access to Indian generic medications.
Cuba offers healthcare services in many developing nations and is one of the top nations in this area.
According to the MEA, Diaz-Canel showed interest in India’s Unified Payment Infrastructure and Digital Public Infrastructure, which lead the world in the fintech industry.
“They talked about projects that could be implemented within the BRICS countries in the science and innovation sectors where Cuba is highly regarded,” Diaz-Canel commented on X.
According to him, they looked into how their nations could increase their capacity for collaboration in areas like agriculture, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals for the good of the BRICS nations.
PM Modi wrote on X that their meeting was “wonderful.”
“There is a lot of room for growth in our countries’ economic ties in the years to come. “Technology, healthcare, and energy are equally promising sectors,” he remarked.
According to PM Modi, they also talked about how to improve the disaster management system.
In his post, Diaz-Canel stated, “There is still a lot of potential in sectors like the biopharmaceutical industry, food production, energy, healthcare, and others.”
“Both leaders acknowledged the close relationship that has developed between the two nations over the past 65 years,” he said.
After the Cuban Revolution, when Fidel Castro, the head of the Communist Party, then known as the July 26 Movement, won power in 1959, India and Cuba forged close ties.
Along with India, Cuba was a key player in the nonaligned movement’s heyday after joining it in 1961.
Cuba has continuously received aid from India totaling millions of dollars in cash, food, and other goods.
The two leaders examined bilateral ties in the fields of economic cooperation, development partnership, fintech, capacity building, science and technology, disaster management, and healthcare, according to a statement from the PMO.
President Diaz-Canel acknowledged India’s proficiency in the digital sphere and conveyed interest in UPI and India’s Digital Public Infrastructure.
The two presidents decided to focus on topics that are important to the global south, such as pandemics, health, and climate change. They valued the two nations’ collaboration in the multilateral sphere.
Considered a ‘upveda’ of the Atharva Veda, Ayurveda is an indigenous ancient medicinal science that dates back over 5,000 years in India.
Indeed, the Rigveda makes reference to the usage of herbs for therapeutic purposes.
The terms Ayu (life) and Veda (knowledge) are combined to form the word Ayurveda.
Another proud illustration of the expanding reach of Indian roots progressively spreading far and wide is PM Modi’s appreciation of Cuba for introducing Ayurveda to the public health system.
