Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his two-day official visit to Japan on Friday, when he landed in Tokyo to attend the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit. He said the trip will offer a chance to strengthen current relationships and look into new areas of cooperation.

PM Modi shared an update on the social networking site X, writing, “Arrived in Tokyo. I’m excited to interact with PM Ishiba and others during this visit, which will give us a chance to enhance our current alliances and look into new areas of cooperation as India and Japan continue to fortify their developmental cooperation.

ONO Keiichi, the ambassador of Japan to India, Sibi George, the ambassador of India to Japan, and other high-ranking officials welcomed the prime minister upon his arrival.

Members of the Indian diaspora in Tokyo also gave PM Modi a hearty and animated welcome, demonstrating the close people-to-people relations between the two countries as they welcomed him with exuberant shouts and traditional cultural displays.

PM Modi will meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba for the first time during his visit on August 29–30.

With an emphasis on important areas like innovation, trade and investment, digital technology, defense and security, and climate change, the two leaders are anticipated to assess the status of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.

In his eighth trip to Japan as prime minister, PM Modi has reaffirmed the value India places on its alliance with Tokyo. In order to promote investment in developing industries and investigate deeper economic cooperation, PM Modi will also meet with political and business leaders in Japan in addition to the summit.

The leaders are also anticipated to talk on global peace initiatives, sustainable development, and regional and global issues, especially those affecting the Indo-Pacific.

In May 2023, PM Modi made his most recent trip to Japan. The last time he and PM Ishiba met was during the ASEAN-India Summit in Vientiane in 2024 and on the fringes of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, in June 2025.

PM Modi will go to China to attend the 25th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) after wrapping up his obligations in Japan.
