In an attempt to increase mass deportations, the Donald Trump administration declared that it will reimburse illegal immigrants in the United States $1,000 plus their travel expenses if they voluntarily left.
“Today, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced a historic opportunity for illegal aliens to receive both financial and travel assistance to facilitate travel back to their home country through the CBP (Customs & Border Protection) Home App,” the agency stated in a statement.
“Any illegal alien who uses the CBP Home App to self-deport will also receive a stipend of 1,000 dollars, paid after their return to their home country has been confirmed through the app,” the statement continued.
The agency stated that self-deportation through the app is expected to reduce the expenses of a deportation by about 70%, even after accounting for the cost of the stipend. According to the Xinhua news agency, the average cost to apprehend, imprison, and remove an illegal alien is currently $17,121.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated, “The best, safest, and most economical way to leave the United States to avoid arrest if you are here illegally is to self-deport.”
US President Donald Trump asserted during a recent rally address in Michigan that his first 100 days in office were the most successful of any US administration in history, pointing to measures such as a rise in the number of illegal immigrants deported as major accomplishments.
Despite Trump’s declaration of victory, diplomatic, legal, and logistical barriers have kept mass deportations below goals.
According to a recent report by the Brookings Institution, “the number of deportations is one area where the administration appears to be failing to meet its enforcement goals.”
“The numbers of deportations remain modest, but the chilling effects are potentially severe,” the report stated.
Numerous experts, meanwhile, voiced worries about the administration’s immigration policy’ potential effects.
“It has been a terrific electoral issue for (Trump) because Americans are concerned about illegal immigration. However, surveys indicate that many dislike his strategy and believe he has been deporting people without following the proper procedures,” Darrell West, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, told Xinhua.
