President Donald Trump of the United States has pledged to “crush rioters” in Los Angeles after federal immigration raids caused days of rioting.
The federal government’s seizure of the California National Guard and the sending of 2,000 troops to the city, however, has been strongly denounced by California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has called it a political ploy intended to incite violence.
“The Federal Government will intervene and resolve the issue, RIOTS & LOOTERS, the proper way if California Governor Gavin Newscum and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass are unable to perform their duties, which everyone knows they cannot!” Trump wrote.
Since then, Governor Gavin Newsom has described the federal government’s intention to send 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles as hazardous and politically motivated, effectively seizing operational control of the California National Guard.
“The federal government is taking over the California National Guard and deploying 2,000 soldiers in Los Angeles – not because there is a shortage of law enforcement, but because they want a spectacle,” Newsom wrote in a scathing retort that was posted on X. Avoid giving them one. Don’t ever employ violence. Speak up in a calm manner.
“The federal government is moving to take over the California National Guard and deploy 2,000 soldiers,” Newsom wrote earlier, warning that the action will further exacerbate tensions on the ground. That action is intentionally provocative and will only make things worse. Law enforcement support is readily available to LA authorities. There are currently no unmet needs, and we work closely with the county and city. Throughout the recovery process, the Guard has been serving LA with distinction. This mission is incorrect and will undermine public confidence.
Additionally, he pointed out that current federal immigration operations are being conducted carelessly:
“The state is deploying more CHP to protect the peace on Los Angeles highways while the federal government conducts frantic immigration searches across the nation. Helping with federal immigration enforcement is not their responsibility. In order to have a reason to escalate, the federal government is causing turmoil. That is not the conduct of any civilized nation.
Large-scale immigration raids that targeted illegal residents in multiple neighborhoods of Los Angeles sparked the protests.
Advocates for immigrants and civil rights organizations have denounced the operations as excessively violent and racially tinged. After clashes with federal agents, dozens of protesters were taken into custody, and numerous reports of injuries surfaced.
According to local leaders, the city has plenty of law enforcement support and federal intervention is both needless and divisive.
