In a welcome response to US President Donald Trump’s statement on Wednesday regarding the resumption of trade talks between the US and India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that the talks will “unlock the limitless potential of the India-US partnership.”
Trump said that talks to remove trade obstacles between the two countries would resume in a post on his social media platform Truth Social.
In response to Trump’s comments, Prime Minister Modi wrote on X that he was confident in the result of the current trade talks and reaffirmed the strength of the India-US friendship.
“India and the United States are natural allies and strong friends. I have no doubt that our trade talks will open the door to the India-US partnership’s boundless possibilities. Our teams are trying to wrap up these conversations as soon as possible. Additionally, I am excited to talk to President Trump. To ensure a better, more prosperous future for both of our people, we shall cooperate,” PM Modi wrote on X.
Trump declared that his administration had reopened trade talks with India on Tuesday (US time).
He wrote on Truth Social, “I am happy to announce that the United States of America and India are continuing negotiations to address the Trade Barriers between our two nations.”
Trump also called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “very good friend” on Tuesday, adding that he hopes to talk to him “in the upcoming weeks.”
“I have no doubt that reaching a successful conclusion for both of our wonderful countries will not be difficult,” he continued.
Trump’s most recent remarks come after the United States recently softened its approach.
“I’ll always be friends with Prime Minister Modi,” Trump declared earlier Friday at a White House press conference, referring to him as a “great Prime Minister.”
In response to India’s ongoing purchases of Russian oil during the conflict in Ukraine, Trump doubled the first 25% duty on Indian shipments to the US to 50% on August 27.
