Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, officially opened the domestically produced 1 MW Green Hydrogen Power Plant at Gujarat’s Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla on Thursday.
With an annual production capacity of about 140 metric tons of green hydrogen, the plant is well-positioned to contribute significantly to sustainable port operations and maritime decarbonization.
The minister hailed the creation of a wholly Indian-engineered, fully Aatmanirbhar, future-ready hydrogen ecosystem, describing it as a model for ports nationwide to embrace cutting-edge, environmentally friendly technologies. Citing the prior deployment of India’s first Made-in-India all-electric green tug for operations at the port, he also praised DPA’s ongoing dedication to green projects.
Recalling the Prime Minister’s May 26 visit to Bhuj, where he laid the foundation stone for a 10 MW Green Hydrogen Plant, Sonowal praised the project’s prompt completion. As part of the larger 10 MW project, the 1 MW module was put into service in just four months, setting a new standard for the deployment of India’s green hydrogen ecosystem.
“Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) has turned that vision into reality, a shining example of speed, scale, and skill under Maritime India Vision 2030,” stated the minister.
According to Sonowal, this milestone reaffirms India’s commitment to reaching Net Zero emissions and serves as a potent symbol of the country’s green transformation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inspiring leadership.
“Congratulating the leadership of DPA and the engineering excellence of L&T, the Minister said: “I salute the whole team of Deendayal Port Authority, led by the Chairman, and appreciate the engineers of L&T for accomplishing this complicated project with exceptional speed and precision.”
Shantanu Thakur, the Union Minister of State for MoPSW, also commended the historic accomplishment, saying: “This is a proud moment not just for Gujarat but for the entire country.” India’s increasing dominance in renewable energy is demonstrated by the commissioning of this green hydrogen plant at DPA.
Union Minister of State Thakur, Secretary of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways T.K. Ramachandran, DPA Chairman Sushil Kumar Singh, and senior officials from the ministry, the port, and L&T attended the Union Minister at the inauguration.
