France and India talk about the status of their free trade agreement talks

Piyush Goyal, the minister of commerce and industry, met with French Finance Minister Eric Lombard in Paris on Monday to review the status of the free trade agreement (FTA) talks between India and the EU.

“Held a productive meeting with @Eric_R_Lombard, French Minister of Economy, Finance, and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty,” Goyal wrote in a post on the social media platform X.

Goyal expressed his excitement for closer business relations between France and India.

Goyal met with Christophe Perillat, CEO of Valeo Group, a multinational automotive supplier with a significant presence in India, earlier in the day.

Appreciate the company’s ambitions to increase investments in India and its faith in the country’s economic story. The Union Minister reported, “We talked about ways to increase their manufacturing presence in India.”

He also spoke with L’Oréal Group CEO Nicolas Hieronimus on the company’s potential to “Make in India” globally.

In Paris, the commerce minister also met with other leading international CEOs to discuss their future investment strategies for the Indian market in areas that show promise, such as renewable energy (RE) and electric vehicles.

In addition to attending a World commerce Organization (WTO) ministerial conference on Tuesday, the minister is in France on an official visit with the goal of increasing commerce and investments.

A free trade agreement (FTA) between India and Oman is expected to be signed shortly, according to the commerce minister, as the two nations’ negotiations are progressing.

The next stop on the Union Minister’s formal tour will be Italy after his obligations in France.
