The Delhi government started implementing stringent new regulations on End-of-Life (EOL) vehicles on Tuesday, marking a significant stride in the fight against vehicle pollution.
All gas stations in the National Capital Territory (NCT) will refuse fuel to elderly cars detected by AI-powered Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras in accordance with the Commission for Air Quality Management’s (CAQM) directives.
EOL vehicles—those that have over the legal age limit of 10 years for diesel vehicles and 15 years for gasoline vehicles—will not be permitted to refill at gas or diesel stations as of Tuesday. If these cars are discovered in public, they will also face steep fines.
Owners of two-wheelers will be penalized Rs 5,000, and owners of four-wheelers would be fined Rs 10,000.
Using information from license plates, AI-enabled cameras placed at gas stations will recognize out-of-date cars automatically. These vehicles will be identified and flagged in the system to stop fuel from being issued.
Operators of gas pumps have voiced cautious optimism on the deployment. The device was established by the Delhi government, according to Sanjay Dedha, manager of a gas station in Vivek Vihar. Let’s see if any cars in that category arrive today. We are waiting for the system to function properly. We will physically identify older cars and refuse to provide them gasoline or diesel if there are any server-related issues.
Supervisor Ram Lagan Shukla of Bharat Petroleum, Lal Kuan, stated: “As of today, the first of the month, vehicles that are more than 15 years old and operate on gasoline will not be supplied gasoline here. We’ll also examine the car’s paperwork and overall condition.”
The new enforcement strategy is a component of a larger strategy to lower emissions and enhance air quality in the capital, which is often one of the most polluted cities in the world.
Additionally, authorities have declared that beginning Tuesday, EOL cars parked in public areas or close to gas stations would be impounded.
To avoid fines and seizure, Delhi car owners are asked to confirm the registration status of their vehicles and refrain from driving out-of-date models.
