IndiGo, a low-cost airline, reached an agreement with Airbus on Sunday to increase the size of its wide-body aircraft order by turning 30 of its 70 aircraft purchase rights into a firm order.
This is an additional phase in establishing the airline’s long-term strategies for global growth.
“We are placing a firm order for 30 Airbus A350-900s,” IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers stated. Elbers stated at a conference in the nation’s capital that it is now making a formal order for 30 aircraft out of the 70-plane option.
In order to strategically introduce widebody aircraft into its fleet, IndiGo placed a firm order for 30 A350-900 aircraft last year, with the option to purchase an additional 70 aircraft.
Delivery of the initial order is anticipated to begin in 2027.
The CEO of IndiGo stated, “We will continue to add one aircraft per week to double by the end of the decade.”
By connecting Indian metros to other regions of the world, this calculated move would allow IndiGo to broaden its reach and develop its long-haul international network.
According to a statement from the airline, “this will enable more flights to the hubs of its partner airlines and create more travel options for its customers to new international destinations.”
Rolls-Royce’s Trent XWB engine will power IndiGo’s Airbus A350-900 aircraft.
As IndiGo starts the next phase of its amazing adventure to meet the quickly changing needs of the Indian market, the mission capability of this aircraft and the efficiency of the Trent XWB engine will provide it with previously unheard-of options and reach.
Six temporarily leased wide body aircraft were introduced by IndiGo in March 2025 as part of its preparations for long-haul operations; deliveries of these aircraft are scheduled to be completed by 2026.
The airline operates over 2,200 flights each day with a fleet of over 400 aircraft.
