Semiconductor is an important sector in the cooperation between India and Japan, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday.
Calling the semiconductor sector, a “strategic domain”, PM Modi, who is on an official visit to Japan, said that India “has made significant progress in this field”.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi arrived in Sendai in Japan’s Miyagi Prefecture, where he travelled aboard the iconic Shinkansen (bullet train) alongside Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba.
In Sendai, the two leaders visited Tokyo Electron Miyagi Ltd (TEL Miyagi), a leading Japanese company in the semiconductor sector.
“I went to the Tokyo Electron facility and saw Prime Minister Ishiba. I spoke with the company’s leaders and looked over the training area and Production Innovation Lab,” PM Modi wrote in a post on social media site X.
“A key area of collaboration between Japan and India is semiconductors. India has made great strides in this area in recent years, and a growing number of young people are now participating. “I hope to maintain this momentum going forward,” he continued.
In a statement released by the PMO, PM Modi “reaffirmed India’s readiness to work closely with Japan in this strategic domain” and thanked PM Ishiba for accompanying him on this tour.
The Prime Minister received a briefing on TEL’s advanced manufacturing capabilities, its role in the global semiconductor value chain, and its planned and continuing partnerships with India. The leaders gained a hands-on understanding of the prospects for collaboration in semiconductor supply chain, fabrication, and testing between the two nations through the factory visit, according to the PMO.
The trip to Sendai also demonstrated how Japan’s advantages in cutting-edge semiconductor technology and equipment complement India’s expanding semiconductor manufacturing environment.
According to the PMO, “both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in this sector, building on ongoing partnerships under the India-Japan Industrial Competitiveness Partnership and Economic Security Dialogue as well as the Memorandum of Cooperation on the Japan-India Semiconductor Supply Chain Partnership.”
The joint tour also emphasized Japan’s and India’s shared goal of creating reliable, strong, and trustworthy semiconductor supply chains.
In Tokyo, PM Modi also had meetings with the governors of sixteen Japanese prefectures, emphasizing the transformative potential of interregional partnerships in fields ranging from startups and emerging technologies to commerce and innovation.
At the request of Japanese Prime Minister HE Shigeru Ishiba, PM Modi is traveling to Japan for two days, from August 29 to 30. PM Modi is in Japan for the seventh time. In May 2023, PM Modi made his most recent trip to the nation.
