The Suzuki Motor Plant in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, is hosting Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday. While there, he will start the local production of hybrid battery electrodes and introduce the export of Maruti Suzuki’s first global battery electric vehicle (BEV), the e VITARA, to more than 100 countries, including Japan and European countries.
“The Prime Minister will launch localized manufacture of hybrid battery electrodes and launch battery electric car exports to 100 nations at Hansalpur, Ahmedabad, on August 26 at approximately 10:30 a.m. In addition, he will speak at the event, the PMO announced in a statement.
The TDS Lithium-Ion Battery facility, a joint venture between Toshiba, Denso, and Suzuki, will start producing hybrid battery electrodes locally, marking an important turning point for India’s EV and battery ecosystem. This move advances India’s clean energy and manufacturing objectives by ensuring that more than 80% of battery value is now produced domestically.
The largest automobile manufacturer in India, Maruti Suzuki, debuted the e VITARA at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in January 2025. In FY25, the company sold 19.01 lakh automobiles domestically and exported over 3.32 lakh vehicles, with a combined 2.6 million units produced annually across four sites in India. The Hansalpur facility formally started producing the e VITARA on Tuesday.
With this achievement, Suzuki has made India its global center for electric vehicle manufacturing.
These programs are in line with the government’s overarching goal of establishing India as a global center for sophisticated manufacturing, infrastructure development, and electric mobility. This is a big step in the direction of becoming Aatmanirbhar in the green energy space.
The Prime Minister will dedicate projects in the railway sector worth about Rs 1,400 crore, including the doubling of the 65-kilometer Mahesana-Palanpur railway line, which would cost Rs 530 crore.
