Gopal Vittal, the Managing Director and CEO of Airtel, announced on Wednesday that the company has launched an AI-powered spam detection solution that will notify customers in real time about suspected spam calls and SMSs. This comes as the Centre has asked telecom service providers to remove spam calls and messages immediately.
Telecom providers have been directed by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to cease sending unsolicited calls and messages and adhere to its guidelines for whitelisting URLs, APKs, and over-the-top (OTT) links.
Speaking to IANS, Vittal claimed that 97 percent of spam calls and 99.5% of spam mails could be quickly recognised with the use of this artificial intelligence technique.
Users will be able to access the AI solution starting on Thursday.
“Airtel had spent over a year developing this AI model. Users will receive notifications regarding spam on their dials. Also, this will lower the possibility of fraud. With this AI technique, we are currently able to identify 97% of spam calls. In the near future, we want to make up the remaining three percent,” Vittal told IANS.
He continued by saying that there is no need to download any particular program because this service is free for all users.
The solution, which is intended to provide dual-layer protection, consists of two filters: one at the network layer and another at the IT systems layer. All SMS and calls are routed through this two-layered AI barrier.
“Every day, our solution handles 2.5 billion calls and 1.5 billion texts in 2 milliseconds. This is the same as applying AI to process one trillion records in real time, according to Vittal.
Three million spam SMSs and 100 million possible spam calls each day have been effectively identified by the system. The AI-powered solution, created in-house by Airtel’s data scientists, classifies calls and SMSs as “Suspected SPAM” based on a proprietary algorithm.
