In the women’s singles final, Barbora Krejcikova overcame a two-set deficit to defeat Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, winning her first Wimbledon title and second Grand Slam victory on Saturday. Paolini was beaten by Czech Republic’s No. 31 seed Krejcikova 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in a closely fought Wimbledon debut final for both players.
Krejcikova was the French Open champion three years ago. The greatest interval between Grand Slam victories since Karolina Pliskova’s 18-event span between the US Open 2016 and Wimbledon 2021 has elapsed after thirteen significant tournaments.
After finishing in the quarterfinals of this year’s Wimbledon in the doubles division, Krejcikova’s success further enhances her already impressive CV.
After six years, Angelique Kerber was the oldest player to win a Wimbledon championship, and Krejcikova, at 28, is the oldest. She is the fifth Czech player, after Jana Novotna, Petra Kvitova, Karolina Pliskova, and Marketa Vondrousova, to advance to the Wimbledon women’s singles finals during the Open Era.
Additionally, Krejcikova made history on Saturday by being the first Czech player to win a Grand Slam in women’s singles tennis across multiple tournaments.
With a flawless forehand winner to start the match, Krejcikova broke Paolini’s serve to win 10 of the first 11 games in the championship match. In the opening set, which lasted 35 minutes, she broke the Italian’s serve twice without facing a break point. In contrast to Paolini’s ten careless mistakes, the Czech player scored ten goals.
Given her opening act in the first set, Krejcikova appeared to be headed for a straight-set triumph. Paolini, though, had other ideas as she broke Krejcikova twice and converted her first break point of the match to take a 2-0 lead. For every 14 unforced errors made by Krejcikova, Paolini got eight winners.
However, the two players found a rhythm and produced their best tennis in the third set. Paolini was serving at 3-all when Krejcikova created the first lead. Paolini’s uneasy double fault gave her her second break point of the match, which she converted. She never gave up the lead and rode it to a well-earned victory.
