India’s captain, Shubman Gill, stated that his team’s belief that whatever small gap they made could be leveraged to establish a road of victory was the foundation of their series-leveling six-run victory over England in the fifth Test at The Oval.

India leveled the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series at 2-2 on day five of the match when Mohammed Siraj claimed a decisive 5-104 and knocked out England for 367 in a pursuit of 374. When Joe Root and Harry Brook scored hundreds, it appeared that India would not win, but Siraj and Prasidh Krishna made sure the visitors concluded an exciting Test series with a triumph.

“What this team is all about was summed up this morning. About 70 runs, seven wickets remaining. Few teams in the world would have given themselves a chance, the way Brook and Root were playing. However, this team is confident that we can succeed and overcome every opportunity that presents itself.

We were discussing that after Brook was out, and since we had already taken out Jacob Bethell early, let’s try to put pressure on them. At the press conference after the game, Gill stated, “One more wicket from here, and you never know, it’s cricket, still 70 odd runs on day 4 on that kind of a wicket, or even 50 runs, they would be under pressure.”

In addition, he explained why he was reluctant to take the second new ball and thanked Siraj and Krishna for making his job as captain simpler. However, having bowlers like Siraj bowling makes your job as a captain much easier. You simply want to enjoy their bowling while you’re standing there.

First of all, it is true that we had the choice to take a second ball. However, I believe that we didn’t feel the need for a fresh ball because of the way Siraj and Prasidh were bowling. Even if the ball is eighty-four years old, they can still accomplish the job for us. Second, we believed that this pitch still offered us the opportunity to take wickets.

We were aware that they were under a lot of strain. Because it’s a one-ball game, the batting team is constantly under more strain in this scenario. We thus reasoned that the longer the game, the greater the chance we would have of producing balls that would take wickets,” he explained.

For Gill, the momentous victory at The Oval served as a stark reminder of the value of maintaining composure during the highs and lows of athletics. “I believe there are times like this, like the one we had in the morning, when you feel like the trip was worthwhile. Many highs and lows have occurred, which is to be expected, particularly in athletics.

“You want to be able to perform and score a century every game or every time you get into bat. But regrettably, neither life nor the game operate that way. You ought to be able to handle life’s highs and lows while making an effort to maintain equilibrium.

That’s what I want to be able to maintain equilibrium, regardless of whether we won or lost the match, or whether I performed well or poorly. At least that’s what I believe. It’s a process, but it’s challenging. The ability to maintain equilibrium is the true voyage. So far, so good, but I’m still learning,” he said.
