In a thrilling match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Gujarat Giants ended their run of defeats in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) by defeating the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by an innings.

The Giants went into the game feeling motivated to turn around their bad luck after losing four straight games in Bengaluru.

They broke with tradition by choosing to bat first and creating a tough target thanks to a breathtaking century opening stand between Laura Wolvaardt and Beth Mooney.

The 140 runs that Wolvaardt and Mooney scored together gave the Giants the much-needed boost and laid the groundwork for their comeback in the series. Following her stunning straight drive past Ellyse Perry to take their stand to 140, Wolvaardt went on to record the first fifty by a Giants batter this year, and she did so off just 32 balls. Captain Mooney batted until the very end, finishing on 85 not out to lead her team to their second-highest total 199 for 5 in WPL history, setting the stage for an exciting match.

But the Royal Challengers Bangalore, who are renowned for their fierce chasing skills, turned out to be tough rivals. Sophie Devine scored 99 from the opening position to help RCB chase down 189 against the Giants last year, and she appeared to be eager to do so again.

Sophie Devine led a valiant chase after the intimidating goal that the Giants had set. With his aggressive hitting, Devine threatened to tilt the odds in the RCB’s favour and raise hopes for an incredible comeback.

However, the Giants had a glimmer of hope after her departure at a pivotal moment, which created the tension for a thrilling conclusion.

Two balls after the powerplay, with the RCB on 42 for 2, Devine was at the crease. After putting them in a strong position at 76 for 2, she was dismissed by left-arm spinner Tanuja Kanwar, leaving the RCB middle order to complete the task.

Richa Ghosh and Georgia Wareham put on a heroic display, and RCB was never out of the running. But Wareham’s brilliant batting performance in the final overs added drama to the match and rekindled RCB’s chances of an unlikely triumph. Georgia Wareham, who struck 48 off 22, and Richa Ghosh shared a stand of 33. However, Richa Ghosh played a spirited hand, scoring 30 off 20 balls, but he skied an Ash Gardner full toss to Meghna Singh at cover, thereby ending RCB’s chances.

Ultimately, the Gujarat Giants’ story was one of tenacity and resolve as they persevered to earn a fierce triumph. Now that they have scored their first points, they are in a strong position to contend for the knockout rounds, which might mean a possible comeback for their WPL season.
