The Delhi Capitals failed to break their record of finishing second in the finals of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025, as Mumbai Indians held their nerve to win by eight runs in the 2025 season title clash and clinch their second title in front of 14,700 fans at the Brabourne Stadium on Saturday.
MI’s victory was set up by skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, who timed and placed her shots perfectly to top score with 66 as the hosts produced 149/7. Nat Sciver-Brunt grabbed 3-30 in defence of 150, including the wicket of Marizanne Kapp, while Amelia Kerr took 2-25 as MI held DC to 141/9 in 20 overs.
Except for Marizanne’s 40, Jemimah’s 30, and Niki Prasad’s 25 not out, none of DC’s batters got going as they froze under pressure once more and couldn’t handle MI’s bowlers standing up when it really mattered to become the most successful franchise in the WPL.
Chasing 150, DC lost both openers, Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma, in the first three overs. While Meg was castled by Nat’s tearing off cutter for 13, Shafali got stuck lbw for four while attempting to flick off Shabnim Ismail. It was the first time Meg and Shafali have been dismissed for less than 15 runs in the same WPL innings for DC.
Jess Jonassen hit crucial boundaries for DC, cutting Hayley Matthews twice before Jemimah swept her for four more. However, shortly after the power play ended, DC began to decline. Jess miscued the slog off Amelia’s googly, and the top edge was caught by Yastika Bhatia, who then stumped Annabel Sutherland with Saika Ishaque’s bowling.
Jemimah fought alone, hitting three boundaries off Amelia, but the all-rounder emerged victorious by diving forward to take a catch after pulling a leading edge from the batter. Marizanne hit two boundaries off Nat and Hayley, but a communication breakdown resulted in her seeing Sarah Bryce run out for five.
With 52 runs needed from the last five overs, Marizanne cleanly lofted Saika for four and then had luck on her side when Amelia caught it, but it went over the boundary rope for a six. She immediately hammered a drive down the ground, and Shabnim was unable to keep the ball from colliding with the boundary rope for four, as 17 runs were scored in the 16th over.
After Shabnim scored six runs in the 17th over, DC’s final significant hope in the chase was dashed when Marizanne holed out to long-off against Nat, who castled Shikha Pandey with the next ball. Hayley had Minnu Mani slicing to backward point, and despite Niki remaining unconquered, DC tasted heartbreak as MI demonstrated their much-admired big-game temperament to feel the ecstasy of a championship win at home once more.
