External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar will travel to the United States of America from December 24-29, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Monday.

“He will meet with counterparts to discuss key bilateral, regional, and global issues.” During his visit, EAM will also preside over a conference of Indian Consul Generals in the United States,” according to a MEA release.

The major visit comes just before US President-elect Donald Trump takes the oath of office to begin his second term on January 20.

Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Trump and expressed his desire to work closely with the Republican Party leader who won the presidential election by defeating his Democratic Party competitor Kamala Harris.

“I had a terrific talk with my friend, President Donald Trump, and congratulated him on his spectacular victory. “Looking forward to working closely together once more to further strengthen India-US relations in technology, defence, energy, space, and several other sectors,” PM Modi, one of the first international leaders to congratulate Trump on his election victory, wrote on X.

Both leaders had reaffirmed their commitment to working together for global peace, with Trump reportedly noting that the entire world admires PM Modi, adding that India is a wonderful country and its Prime Minister “a magnificent man.”

At the same time, PM Modi had formed a strong rapport with US President Joe Biden, and relations between the two democracies improved over his four-year presidency, during which the two leaders met on multiple occasions.

They had previously met on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Brazil and at the US President’s weekend house in Delaware in September.

Biden also visited India last year for the G20 summit hosted by Prime Minister Modi, where they held bilateral meetings.

Biden received PM Modi on a state visit to Washington last year to showcase pageantry, saying, “Each time, I was struck by our capacity to find new avenues of cooperation. We’re unlocking a common future with what I consider to be limitless possibilities.”

PM Modi and Biden elevated the Quad, the group for Indo-Pacific cooperation that includes Japan and Australia, to the summit level.

They also formed the I2U2 group, which included India, Israel, the UAE, and the United States, to duplicate the Quad on India’s western side.
