An Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner carrying 242 passengers crashed shortly after departure from Ahmedabad airport, in what is regarded as one of the greatest aviation catastrophes in Indian history.
241 people were killed when the plane, which was flying as Flight AI-171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed into a residential complex close to BJ Medical College.
There were two pilots, ten cabin staff, and 230 passengers on the doomed flight. Only one individual, a British national of Indian descent who was sitting in seat 11A, survived the collision, according to officials, and is now receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
At 1.38 p.m. (IST) on Thursday, the plane took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. A few seconds later, it lost control and crashed into a crowded location, starting a huge fire and sending emergency reaction teams all over the city.
In a formal statement on X, Air India confirmed the accident: “UPDATE: Air India confirms that on June 12, 2025, aircraft AI171, which was traveling from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, engaged with a mishap. 230 passengers and 12 staff members were on board the 12-year-old Boeing 787-8 when it took off from Ahmedabad at 1338 hours. Shortly after takeoff, the plane crashed. We regret to notify you that 241 of the 242 people on board have been confirmed dead. In a hospital, the lone survivor is receiving treatment.
The airline also disclosed the passengers’ nationalities: one Canadian, seven Portuguese, 53 British, and 169 Indians.
“Air India extends its sincerest sympathies to the departed’s families. The needs of everyone impacted, their families, and loved ones are now the sole focus of our efforts. The letter further stated that an Air India team of caregivers is now in Ahmedabad to offer extra assistance.
The national carrier has set up special helplines for families looking for information and has promised complete cooperation with authorities looking into the reason of the tragedy.
