Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed over the phone with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim that he will participate digitally at the 47th ASEAN Summit later this month.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, will host the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits from October 26 to 28.

The two leaders talked about strengthening their bilateral relationship and extending collaboration in a number of areas.

In a social media post explaining the exchange, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim wrote, “Last night I received a phone call from my friend, former Prime Minister of the Republic of India Narendra Modi, to discuss efforts to take the Malaysia-India relationship to a more strategic and comprehensive level.”

As he added, “India remains an important partner of Malaysia in the field of trade and investment, besides cooperation in the sectors of technology, education, and security.” He emphasized the significance of the partnership between India and Malaysia.

Anwar said that Prime Minister Modi will attend the ASEAN Summit virtually because of India’s Diwali celebrations. “I respect that decision and extend my Deepavali greetings to him and the entire people of India,” stated the president.

He reiterated Malaysia’s determination to improve ASEAN-India collaboration and fortify its relationship with India “towards a more peaceful and prosperous region.”

Malaysia will serve as Southeast Asia’s diplomatic capital for the duration of the historic 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, which it is getting ready to host.

The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre is anticipated to host more than 30 heads of state and government, including those from ASEAN countries and important dialogue partners including the US, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

Under Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship theme of “Inclusivity and Sustainability,” discussions will center on inclusive growth, economic resilience, and regional peace.

With a closing ceremony and the official transfer of the ASEAN Chairmanship to the Philippines, the three-day summit will come to a conclusion on October 28. This will mark the end of a major year for Malaysia in promoting regional cooperation and shared prosperity.
