As part of his bi-weekly Bharat newsletter for the fortnight of July 15–31, Prime Minister Narendra Modi published the Big Bang Numbers on the Indian economy on Tuesday on the Namo app.
The newsletter announced that the world’s tallest tunnel is being built at Shinkun La, the state border between Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh, and that India’s market capitalisation has reached a record $5.5 trillion.
Among the other highlights are:
*In just four years, Indian MSMEs generated over 20.5 crore jobs, and women currently own 39% of the nation’s MSMEs.
* 1.4 lakh officially acknowledged startups creating 15.5 lakh jobs.
In India, employment increased by 35% to 64.33 crore during the previous six fiscal years.
*From 2017–18 to 2022–2023, the manufacturing industry (formal and informal businesses) experienced a rise in employment prospects of 85 lakh.
*India’s exports increased by 5.5% to $21.2 billion, leaving a $300 million trade surplus. It is now anticipated that exports will exceed $800 billion in this fiscal year. India’s exports of electronic items increased 16.9% to $2.82 billion in June.
*Apple iPhone shipments totalled $3.8 billion in Q1 2024–2025, accounting for 79% of India’s FOB value.
*From $23.78 billion in May to $20.98 billion in June, India’s trade deficit has decreased.
*India increased its foreign direct investment (FDI) pledges from $1.14 billion in June 2023 to $2.14 billion in June 2024.
*In 2024, India Inc. raised Rs 32,619 crore through foreign bonds. Rs 30,772 crore was invested in Indian markets by FPI.
*The market for card payments in India is expected to grow by 11.3% in 2024 to reach Rs 28.4 trillion.
*In India, GCCs closed 6,667 leasing agreements, a 16 percent rise.
* For FY24, almost 6 crore ITRs were filed, 70% of which were done so under the new tax law.
*Since June of previous year, domestic air passenger traffic increased by 5.76 percent, from 12.4 million to 13.2 million.
*From 5.7 million units in Q1 FY24 to 6.2 million units in Q1 FY25, retail automobile sales increased by 9%.
* Sales of Porsche India increased by 40% between January and June. BMW India broke records in H1 2024 with 7,098 automobiles, 3,614 bikes, and 2,000 electric vehicles between 2018 and 2023.
