Thursday marks the end of Parliament’s monsoon session, which began on July 21 and has been in session for almost a month. The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will meet again at 11 a.m. for the session’s culminating session.

The opposition mounted constant protests during the monsoon session, which was interrupted by several adjournments.

A thorough debate of the Bihar voter list revision in advance of the next Assembly elections was their main demand. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Election Commission of India (ECI) have been charged by opposition parties with “conspiring” to tamper with the state’s voter list.

The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 was approved by the Lok Sabha on Wednesday in spite of the opposition’s vociferous protests.

The goal of the law is to control and advance the online gaming sector, which includes social gaming, educational games, and e-sports. It imposes more stringent rules on gaming platforms, especially those that provide real-money games like poker.

During the session, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also proposed important measures, one of which requires elected officials who are arrested or detained on serious criminal accusations to be removed.

The Prime Minister, Union ministers, Chief Ministers, and ministers of Union Territories will all be affected by the law, if it is passed.

Shah introduced three important bills: the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill 2025, the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization (Amendment) Bill 2025.

As per the regulations, any state or union territory’s prime minister, union minister, chief minister, or minister who is detained for 30 days in a row for offenses that entail a minimum jail sentence of five years will have to step down by the 31st day.

They will be immediately removed from office if they do not comply.

A Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) has been tasked with reviewing the proposed law and is expected to report on it on the first day of the following parliamentary session.

Shah promised that the opposition would have plenty of time to voice concerns and opinions to the panel.
