Indians should embrace ‘Swadeshi‘ products to celebrate the holiday season, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged, highlighting the country’s pride in regional ingenuity and craftsmanship.

In a late Saturday post on X, Prime Minister Modi exhorted the 140 crore people of the country to enjoy Diwali by buying Indian-made products and exclaiming, “Garv Se Kaho Yeh Swadeshi Hai!” Declare with pride that this is Swadeshi.

In order to motivate others and create a surge of support for homegrown producers and craftspeople, he promoted posting purchases on social media.

In his statement, the prime minister cited a lively video from MyGovIndia that included musician Shankar Mahadevan and Bollywood celebrities Varun Dhawan, Madhuri Dixit, Tripti Dimri, Anupam Kher, Sunil Grover, and Rupali Ganguly.

The two-minute video short shows families shopping for electronics, sarees, candy, and shoes that are all marked “Made in India.” It is set in busy markets that are illuminated with lights.

It emphasizes local locations such as the Pure Education Collection in Kolkata’s Tollygunge, the Men’s Collection in Old Delhi, the Mandore Bazar in Jodhpur, and the Lighthouse on Rajpur Road in Dehradun.

The viral video encourages the purchase of domestically made automobiles, gadgets made by young Indians, such as computers, TVs, air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, and smartphones.

It ends with the ‘Vocal for Local’ slogan, which encourages people to post selfies of themselves with goods or craftspeople on the NaMo app. PM Modi has promised to repost some of the posts.

PM Modi’s long-running ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) campaign, which was started in 2020 during the epidemic to increase domestic manufacturing and decrease imports, is in line with this plan.

According to industry estimates, it might boost the economy, particularly during Diwali when consumer spending rises by 20–30%.

India is pushing to reduce its need on imports.

Responses on social media ranged from praise to criticism of imported luxury goods.

A ‘Swadeshi’ buying frenzy could be sparked by PM Modi’s call as the festivals get near.
