On Monday, a number of petitions contesting the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar’s electoral registers will be heard by the Supreme Court.
Ahead of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, this revision process—which aims to purify the voter list—has generated heated political and legal discussions.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi will resume hearing the appeals against the ECI order directing the SIR exercise in Bihar on September 8, according to the causelist posted on the highest court’s website.
Prior to this, the Bench led by Justice Surya Kant refused to extend the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) September 1 deadline for submitting claims and objections to the draft electoral rolls that were released during the first stage of the SIR.
The change occurred after the ECI promised the supreme court that objections submitted after September 1 but before to the nomination deadline would still be taken into account for the voters’ list.
Applications from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and other political parties seeking an extension of the Election Commission’s deadline for submitting claim forms were being considered by the highest court.
The bench led by Justice Surya Kant stated in its September 1 ruling: “The process of considering claims would continue till the last date of nominations. Permit the claims and objections to remain lodged.
The Bihar State Legal Services Authority was also asked to send paralegal volunteers (PLVs) to help voters and political parties submit online claims, objections, or revisions.
According to the sources, the ECI has scheduled a meeting of all state Chief Electoral Officers (CEO) in Delhi on September 10 and is thinking of holding SIR across the nation. Gyanesh Kumar, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), the Election Commissioners, and other high-ranking poll officials would be present at the conference.
