With a pledge to support development, India was elected to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for a three-year term beginning next year, receiving 181 of the 187 valid votes.

Following Wednesday’s election, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar promised in an X post that “India remains committed to championing development issues and keep working to strengthen the ECOSOC.”

In addition to praising the nations that supported India for their “overwhelming support and reposing their trust in us,” he commended the diplomats at India’s UN Mission for making sure the country’s election was held.

India has been on the council, or ECOSOC for short, for at least 18 terms. The country’s most recent four-year period was from 2008 to 2020.

When it comes to sustainable development and economic issues, ECOSOC is the primary UN organization that represents all 193 of its members.

A third of the 54 members of ECOSOC serve three-year terms, and 18 seats were up for election.

Four seats for the Asia Pacific area were up for election this year; the seats are allocated by region.

With 180 votes, China, whose tenure ends this year, secured reelection.

Additionally elected were Lebanon and Turkmenistan, each of which received 183 votes.

All of them had the regional group’s endorsement and were the only contenders in the contest.

Russia was pushed into a runoff after failing to receive enough votes to win one of the three seats for the region in the first round, and Ukraine upset the status quo in the East Europe group.

There were five candidates for the three seats because the area failed to produce a slate for them.

With two-thirds of the vote, Ukraine (130 votes) and Croatia (140 votes) were chosen in the first round.

The lowest vote-getter, North Macedonia, was eliminated with 59 votes, forcing Russia, with 108, into the runoff against its ally, Belarus, who received 96.

Russia won with 115 votes to Belarus’s 46, while 23 nations boycotted in the runoff, lowering the two-thirds barrier.

Italy and Liechtenstein resigned their seats in the ECOSOC, allowing the US and Germany to win by-elections.

India will join the ECOSOC, which also includes its neighbors Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Pakistan.
