Ahead of the important Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting, D.K. Shivakumar, the president of the Congress’ Karnataka branch and a serious candidate for chief minister, met with Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot at Raj Bhavan on Saturday and had a casual conversation. He was accompanied by his brother, D.K. Suresh, a former Congress MP.

He was accompanied by his brother, D.K. Suresh, a former Congress MP.

According to people close to Shivakumar, the purpose of the meeting was to talk over the logistics of the swearing-in ceremony should he be promoted to Chief Minister. The Governor is expected to depart for the temple town of Dharmasthala later in the afternoon, so the meeting took on significance.

Astrologers have recommended June 1, June 3, and June 5 as favorable dates for the oath-taking ceremony, according to reports. It is believed that Shivakumar spoke with the governor about these dates in an effort to determine the best time for the swearing-in. There were allegedly discussions about whether the ceremony should take place at Raj Bhavan or on the magnificent steps of Vidhana Soudha.

The Governor’s office has been notified that June 3 is the most likely date for the swearing-in ceremony, according to sources.

In the meantime, vigorous lobbying for the position of Deputy Chief Minister has started within Congress. According to reports, senior Lingayat leaders M.B. Patil and Eshwar Khandre are vying for the role.

Additionally apparently vying for the position of Deputy Chief Minister are former Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader, seasoned Congress MLA Tanveer Sait, and former minister Zameer Ahmad Khan, a close friend of former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Tanveer Sait from Mysuru district and Khader from coastal Karnataka were both denied the chance to serve in the Siddaramaiah Cabinet. Sait has previously declared that Siddaramaiah’s retirement as Chief Minister will not make him unhappy.

Amid rumors that the Congress high command may consider giving Siddaramaiah’s son, Yathindra Siddaramaiah, a significant role, senior politicians from the Scheduled Caste group, G. Parameshwara and H.C. Mahadevappa, are also optimistic about obtaining the job of Deputy Chief Minister.

However, given the fierce rivalry and conflicting claims from different tribes and factions, sources claimed the party leadership is also considering the option of not creating any Deputy Chief Minister positions.

According to other sources, the new Chief Minister and 12 to 14 lawmakers are expected to be sworn in as ministers.

Since the Governor is expected to depart for Dharmasthala after 1 p.m., Shivakumar’s meeting with the Governor took place prior to the start of the CLP meeting.

Siddaramaiah, the acting chief minister, received complaints from the public on Saturday at his Cauvery home. He is on his way to Pavagada town in the Tumakuru district to see former minister Venkataramanappa’s last rites. He will return to Bengaluru by 1:40 p.m. and attend the CLP meeting, which is set for 4 p.m.
