The government has announced that large internet platforms and social media companies do not need permission to launch or use AI models within the nation, giving them a respite. Let’s investigate the implications for Big Tech.
An update to the AI advice (published on March 1) has been released by the Ministry of Electronics and IT. This implies that the government’s approval is no longer required for large Internet corporations to introduce AI models into the nation.
To alert users to their possible fallibility or unreliability, large digital platforms are suggested to label “under-tested and unreliable AI models.”
“Software(s) or algorithm(s) or further development on such models should be made available to users in India only after appropriately labelling the possible inherent fallibility or unreliability of the output generated,” states the new MeitY advisory. “Under-tested/unreliable Artificial Intelligence foundational models)/ LLM/Generative Al ”
The use of AI models, LLMs, Generative AI, software, or algorithms “does not permit its users to host, display, upload, modify, publish, transmit, store, update, or share any unlawful content as outlined in the Rule 3(1)(b) of the IT Rules or violate any other provision of the IT Act,” according to the requirements placed on all intermediaries and platforms.
“It is reiterated that non-compliance to the provisions of the IT Act and/or IT Rules would result in potential penal consequences to the intermediaries or platforms or its users when identified, including but not limited to prosecution under IT Act and several other statutes of the criminal code,” the advisory states.
The new AI principles are expected to be followed by the digital platforms right away.
The Centre has previously made it clear that startups would not be eligible for clearance to introduce new AI models.
The government claims that the advice is intended to prevent unproven AI platforms from being used on the Indian Internet.
