Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was brought to Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday due to deterioration in his health, according to reports. It is reported that his health is critical.
The 92-year-old former Prime Minister was taken to the hospital’s emergency room at around 8 p.m., according to sources.
The reason for his admission was not immediately clear.
According to his staff, the former Prime Minister is experiencing “extreme breathlessness” and has been admitted to the ICU.
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra arrived at the renowned institute to assess Singh’s health status.
Former Rajasthan Chief Minister and prominent Congress politician Ashok Gehlot said on X, “I am deeply concerned about the health of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh ji. I wish him a swift recovery and good health.
Manmohan Singh departed from the Rajya Sabha in April of this year, and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge praised his long political career.
Manmohan Singh rose to fame as the country’s Finance Minister under PV Narasimha Rao’s cabinet from 1991 to 1996, when he implemented substantial economic reforms.
He was the UPA’s two-term Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014 and a Rajya Sabha member till early this year.
Singh has been a member of the Rajya Sabha since 1991 and served as Leader of the Opposition from 1998 to 2004.
Manmohan Singh was sworn in as Prime Minister on May 22 following the 2004 general elections, and he took the oath of office again on May 22, 2009.
He represented Assam in the Upper House for five terms until moving to Rajasthan in 2019.
His most recent participation in Parliament was against demonetisation, which he described as “organised loot and legalised plunder”.
Singh was born on September 26, 1932, in Punjab, and earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Economics from Panjab University in 1952 and 1954, respectively.
Manmohan Singh finished his Economic Tripos at Cambridge University in 1957. He went on to earn a D.Phil in Economics from Oxford University in 1962.
