Fauja Singh, a century-old marathon runner, perishes in a Punjabi traffic accident

Fauja Singh, a 100-year-old long-distance runner and the oldest marathon runner in the world, passed away at the age of 114 in a traffic accident at Beas Pind, close to Jalandhar, Punjab. The Punjabi-born Indian-British Sikh marathon runner was reportedly struck by an unidentified car while crossing the street in his hometown.

One of Fauja Singh’s relatives notified the Jalandhar rural police of the accident, an officer told the reporters. “We’ve been informed that he was struck by a car as he attempted to cross the street. A police official asserted that the vehicle that caused the collision was most likely an automobile and stated, “We have assembled a team and are looking into it.”

Fauja Singh, who has inspired millions by running marathons past 100, is a global symbol of courage and determination. He started running marathons in his later years and is said to have run more than 100 of them.

Fauja Singh was born on April 1, 1911, in Beas Pind, close to Jalandhar, in the undivided Punjab. In 1994, he lost his sixth son in a construction accident, and he turned to jogging as a way to cope with his loss.

Fauja Singh, who fled to England in the 1990s, began running internationally at the age of 89 and quickly began competing in international marathons. He settled in Ilford with one of his sons, Fauja Singh, who quickly rose to international fame by breaking numerous records for people over 90.

In addition to the marathon, he would compete in a variety of Masters-level long-distance running events. At the special Ontario Masters Association Fauja Singh Invitational Meet, which took place at Birchmount Stadium in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, he set eight world age group records in a single day at the age of 100.

On July 7, 2011, his biography, Turbaned Tornado, was solemnly unveiled in the British House of Lords’ Attlee Room.

In the 2015 New Year’s Honours, he received the British Empire Medal (BEM) for his contributions to charity and sport, and he was one of the torchbearers for the 2012 London Olympics.
