In a meeting with To Lam, the general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, on Wednesday, Gautam Adani, the chairman of the Adani Group, expressed his excitement about facilitating stronger commercial ties between Vietnam and India.

Gautam Adani praised Lam’s audacious reforms and imaginative goal to establish Vietnam as a regional leader in a number of areas, including ports and energy, in a post on the social networking site X.

Meeting H.E. To Lam, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, was an honor. The wealthy businessman said that his audacious changes and ambitious plan to establish Vietnam as a regional leader in ports, energy, logistics, and aviation demonstrated extraordinary strategic vision.

“We look forward to contributing to this transformative journey and enabling deeper Vietnam–India economic partnerships,” Gautam Adani continued.

Vietnam and India have a long history of commercial and trade ties. Official statistics for FY25 shows that bilateral trade increased 6.40 percent year over year to $15.76 billion. $5.43 billion was exported by India to Vietnam, and $10.33 billion was imported by India from Vietnam.

Vietnam ranked as India’s 15th largest export destination and 20th largest trading partner in the world in FY 2024–2025.

In an effort to strengthen marine connections and promote maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific area, Indian Ambassador to Vietnam Sandeeep Arya visited Tien Sa Port last week while Indian Naval Ships Delhi, Shakti, and Kiltan made a port call in Da Nang, Vietnam.

This deployment demonstrates the Indian Navy’s dedication to being a preferred partner and is in line with India’s ‘MAHASAGAR’ mission. The trip to Vietnam is another significant step in developing an inclusive, rules-based maritime order in the Indo-Pacific and fortifying the strategic alliance between India and Vietnam.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh earlier this month in Rio de Janeiro during the 2025 BRICS Summit. In January of this year, Vietnam joined the BRICS group.

Known as a comprehensive strategic relationship, India and Vietnam have long maintained cordial and tight bilateral ties. During Prime Minister Modi’s 2016 visit to Vietnam, India-Vietnam relations were upgraded to a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.” Interestingly, the relationship was formerly referred to as a “Strategic Partnership.”
