On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister and BJP President JP Nadda will choose the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) nominee for the next vice presidential election.
Following a high-level gathering of NDA leaders in New Delhi on Thursday, the statement was made.
The meeting, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, saw the passage of a resolution authorizing PM Modi and Nadda. In a post-event briefing to the media, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that all of the NDA’s allies would support and agree with the final candidate selected by the Prime Minister and the BJP President.
The conference was also attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Shrikant Shinde of the Shiv Sena, Chirag Paswan of the Lok Janshakti Party, Lavu Krishna Devarayalu of the TDP, and Ramdas Athawale of the Republican Party of India. On Wednesday, Eknath Shinde, the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra and a leader of the Shiv Sena, declared his unwavering support for the BJP’s nominee.
Tuesday is anticipated to see the official announcement of the NDA’s vice presidential candidate, ahead of the nomination deadline of August 21.
The midterm resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, who left the position for medical reasons, made the vice presidential election necessary. His resignation, though, has led to a lot of conjecture about possible underlying conflicts between him and the government.
September 9 is the scheduled date for the vice presidential election.
Members of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha make up the electoral college that chooses India’s vice president. The NDA has a significant numerical advantage in Parliament and is strong enough to guarantee its candidate’s win.
The position is politically crucial because the Vice President of India simultaneously holds the position of ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
