At the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on Monday, the Indian Navy will commission Mahe, the first of the Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft.

The Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi will preside over the event, which is being hosted by Vice-Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command, according to a statement from the official.

A new breed of native shallow-water fighters, sleek, quick, and unwaveringly Indian, will arrive with Mahe’s commissioning.

According to the announcement, the Mahe-class demonstrates India’s increasing proficiency in warship design, building, and integration with over 80% indigenous material.

Driven by independence and committed to protecting India’s maritime borders, Mahe will act as a “Silent Hunter” on the Western Seaboard.

Mahe, which was constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), Kochi, is a prime example of India’s “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” effort in naval ship design and building.

The ship, which is small yet strong, epitomizes endurance, agility, and precision—qualities essential for controlling the littorals.

The ship is built to hunt submarines, carry out coastal patrols, and protect India’s crucial maritime approaches with her unique combination of firepower, stealth, and mobility.

The ship’s crest displays a ‘Urumi’, the flexible blade of Kalaripayattu, which represents agility, accuracy, and deadly elegance. The ship is named after the historic seaside town of Mahe on the Malabar Coast.

The announcement further stated that the Indian Navy presented the Mahe crest last week, which is inspired by the region’s martial and cultural tradition. It features a ‘Urumi’—the flexible sword connected to Kalarippayattu and a symbol of Kerala’s martial past—rising from the sea.

In the meantime, the Indian Navy has begun getting ready for December 3, 2025, which is Navy Day.

On December 3, a stunning operational demonstration at Shangumugham Beach in Thiruvananthapuram will commemorate the day. It will showcase the force’s growing maritime might, professionalism, and accuracy.

The event has been moved forward by one day from its original December 4th date.

The event is a component of the Navy’s plan to celebrate Navy Day away from important naval installations.

The operational demonstration was previously conducted in Sindhudurg (Maharashtra) and Puri (Odisha).
