Following India’s 30-run victory in the fifth game to secure a 3-1 T20I series triumph over South Africa, captain Suryakumar Yadav acknowledged that his own batting form had declined over the series but made a sincere pledge to improve going forward.
Suryakumar scored 12, 5, 12, and 5 in the series, which raised major questions about his form ahead of the T20 World Cup next year. Even though he was unable to reach a fifty, he was pleased with India’s overall performance in T20Is this year.
Finding ‘Surya the batter’ might have been the only thing we were unable to accomplish. I believe he vanished somewhere! But he will return with more strength. I’m very content as a team. Someone would always reach out and help us get through difficult times. That’s really satisfying for me as captain,” he remarked during the post-match presentation ceremony.
Suryakumar emphasized the importance of consistency and intent in the team’s strategy during the series victory. We intended to play a specific kind of cricket from the beginning of the series, and we succeeded in doing so. We made no attempt to change anything.
“Everyone can see the benefits of our efforts to express ourselves across all departments. We believed that our previous series lacked this. Once someone starts going, they don’t stop, which is precisely how we wanted to bat. He remarked, “We wanted that unwavering intent, and today it worked beautifully.”
Suryakumar also appreciated Washington Sundar’s effort with the ball up front and described how Jasprit Bumrah was used tactically. Yes, we wanted to give something new a try. Bumrah was supposed to be used in one over during the powerplay, controlled during the middle phase following drinks, and then prepared for the final overs.
“Washi took over today and did a fantastic job. We faced challenges and pressure at times, but this game is all about how you react, and the boys performed incredibly well. It’s been difficult, but the series is excellent. We accomplished nearly everything we set out to do,” he continued.
Aiden Markram, the captain of South Africa, stated that a chase of 232 always required perfection, but he believed that playing in the T20I series will help them prepare for the World Cup.
It was always going to require an almost flawless effort to chase 232. We were right in the race thanks to Quinny and the top three’s excellent setup. However, we were unable to sustain that momentum in the middle overs.
Nevertheless, there are many things to remember and lessons that we will all learn together. I’m confident that this experience will be beneficial because there are a lot of World Cup matches being played here. It was undoubtedly difficult. Some challenging questions were posed to us.
We now have a better understanding of what is needed to win the World Cup, which is a positive thing. We had to contend with a strong Indian team that performed admirably. He went on, “But we also looked inward, found areas to improve, and the lessons we’ve learned over these two weeks are invaluable.”
When asked if they had clarity over their World Cup team, Markram replied, “Definitely.” We experimented a little early on in the series, trying out different pairings and putting players in different roles to see where we could get the most out of everyone.
“I believe we have a lot of answers now. Things will undoubtedly be better organized going into the World Cup. Giving ourselves the best chance to win that trophy will be our only objective in all we do.
