Following the low-cost carrier’s worst-ever flight problem in December of last year, InterGlobe Aviation Limited’s largest airline, IndiGo, announced on Tuesday that Pieter Elbers had resigned as CEO.
Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of InterGlobe Aviation, has assumed temporary administration of the airline, the airline stated in a report to exchanges.
Pieter Elbers will be leaving his position as CEO of IndiGo with immediate effect. The low-cost airline stated, “The Board of Directors would like to thank Pieter for his contribution and service to the organization and wishes him well in his future endeavors.”
In its regulatory filing, it stated that “Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of IndiGo, shall in the interim assume management of the airline’s affairs until such time that the Company announces the arrival of a new leader, which is expected in short order.”
According to Vikram Singh Mehta, Chairman of the Board, Bhatia is returning to take over management of the airline’s operations in order to fortify the company’s culture, uphold operational excellence, and strengthen its dedication to providing its clients with outstanding care, dependability, and professionalism.
“I feel a strong sense of personal commitment and responsibility towards our country, as well as towards the airline’s customers, employees, shareholders, and all other stakeholders, having founded and nurtured IndiGo for twenty-two years.” Bhatia remarked.
After taking over as CEO of IndiGo just over three years ago, Elbers led the airline through a period of rapid expansion.
During his leadership, IndiGo increased its fleet to over 440 aircraft and surpassed $10 billion in revenue.
Additionally, the airline signed one of the biggest aircraft purchases in aviation history with Airbus, ordering 500 A320-family aircraft.
Nevertheless, a significant operational crisis in December 2025 cast a shadow over Elbers’ term despite these accomplishments.
The airline’s inability to enforce new regulations meant to avoid pilot tiredness was the cause of the inconvenience.
Over 2,500 flights were canceled and nearly 1,900 were delayed by IndiGo between December 3 and December 5, impacting over 300,000 passengers nationwide.
