On Monday (Indian time), US President Donald Trump proposed a new 100% tariff on foreign films, claiming that the American movie industry is “dying a very fast death,” constituting a national security danger.
He accused other countries of providing various incentives to attract filmmakers and studios away from the United States.
“Industry in America is fading very quickly. Other countries are giving a variety of movie incentives to entice our filmmakers and studios away from the United States. Hollywood and many other areas in the United States are devastated. “This is a concerted effort by other nations and, as a result, a national security threat,” he wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.
“In addition to everything else, it’s messaging and propaganda!” As a result, I am authorising the Department of Commerce and the United States Trade Representative to immediately begin the process of imposing a 100% tariff on all foreign-produced films entering our nation. “We want films made in America again,” the tweet continued.
Addressing reporters at the White House on Sunday, Trump blamed California Governor Gavin Newsom for the downturn in Hollywood film output, particularly in recent years.
He said that other countries had been “stealing” films and filmmaking capabilities from the United States.
“If they’re not willing to make a movie inside the United States, we should have a tariff when films come in,” he said.
According to reports, manufacturing in California has decreased as a result of budget cuts and more attractive tax incentives outside the state. Furthermore, the American film business has apparently had a number of economic setbacks in recent years, including Hollywood labour strikes and the Covid epidemic.
In January, Trump named three film actors — Jon Voight, Mel Gibson, and Sylvester Stallone — as special ambassadors tasked with promoting commercial prospects in Hollywood, describing the industry as a “great but very troubled place.”
Trump stated that their mission is to bring business back to Hollywood, claiming that it “has lost much business over the last four years to foreign countries.”
“They will serve as special envoys to me for the purpose of bringing Hollywood, which has lost much business over the last four years to foreign countries, back — bigger, better and stronger than ever before!” Trump posted during that period.
