According to his Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has sent his “heartfelt condolences” to the families of those killed in the Ahmedabad Air India tragedy.
“The news of the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on June 12 that killed over 200 people on board and injured more at the BJ Medical College hostel that was hit during the crash deeply saddens the Secretary-General,” he said on Thursday.
In addition to the Indian government and people, Guterres “offers his sincere condolences to the families of the victims and to all the countries whose citizens were impacted by this tragedy.” He hopes everyone who was hurt recovers quickly and completely,” Haq continued.
Shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad Airport, the Boeing Dreamliner traveling to Gatwick Airport, which is close to London, crashed.
At least one individual was reported to have survived the crash, which involved 242 passengers and crew.
According to reports, the plane struck a medical college campus, killing at least five persons on the ground.
Investigators are currently working to recover the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder, also referred to as “black boxes,” in order to reconstruct the last minutes of the flight. The aircraft had made a distress call just before losing altitude.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has been assigned to conduct the investigation, Indian Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu stated as he hurried to the crash site from Vijayawada.
