As India prepares to chair BRICS next year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India’s approach to important issues like health security and climate change at the Rio 2025 BRICS Summit. He emphasized that India will work to present BRICS in a new form with a “humanity-first” approach.

PM Modi landed in Brasilia, the Brazilian capital, on Monday after a “very productive” trip to Rio de Janeiro, where he attended the 17th BRICS Summit. There, he is anticipated to discuss India-Brazil relations with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Speaking Monday at the BRICS session on Environment, COP-30, and Global Health in Rio de Janeiro, the Prime Minister commended the BRICS for prioritizing important issues like health security and the environment, which he emphasized are essential for humanity’s bright future. He also emphasized that for India, climate justice is a moral obligation rather than a choice.

Climate change and environmental safety have always been India’s top priority, PM Modi emphasized. “For us, it is not just about energy, it is about maintaining a balance between life and nature,” the prime minister stated.

Next year, India will assume the role of BRICS Chair. In this regard, the Prime Minister declared that India would prioritize the global south on its agenda and concentrate on a “humanity first” and people-centric approach.

PM Modi went on to say that India would work to rebrand BRICS under its chairmanship, with the term standing for “Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability.” He praised President Lula for his gracious hospitality and congratulated him on arranging the Summit so well.

BRICS members, partner countries, and invited nations participated in the session on “Environment, COP-30, and Global Health.”

PM Modi expressed gratitude to Brazil for hosting the meeting on matters of such global significance.

The Prime Minister pointed out that climate change affects the harmony between environment and living and is not just a problem for India in terms of energy. He emphasized that India views climate justice as a moral obligation that it must uphold.

He emphasized India’s strong commitment to environmental action and described its various initiatives, including the International Solar Alliance, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, the Global Biofuels Alliance, the International Big Cat Alliance, Mission Life, and Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, that support pro-people and pro-planet growth and development.

The Prime Minister pointed out that India was working toward growth in a sustainable way. It fulfilled its Paris Commitments ahead of schedule, despite being the major economy with the fastest rate of growth. He advocated for technological transfer and accessible funding so that underdeveloped nations can combat climate change. He pointed out that the group’s adoption of the Framework Declaration on Climate Finance was a significant advancement in this area.

The Prime Minister elaborated on India’s dedication to green development, stating that the country has adopted the motto “One Earth, One Health” in its assistance to nations, notably during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He emphasized that India was prepared to share its successful digital health initiatives with the nations of the global south. In this regard, PM Modi also praised the BRICS Partnership for Elimination of Socially Determined Diseases announcement.

“Under the motto ‘One Earth, One Health,’ India has increased collaboration with all nations,” the Prime Minister stated during the Environment, COP-30, and Global Health session. Over 500 million people now rely on India’s “Ayushman Bharat,” the largest health insurance program in the world, as their lifeline. There is now an ecology for traditional medical systems including Siddha, Yoga, Ayurveda, and Unani. We are providing healthcare services to more and more people in the most remote areas of the nation through Digital Health programs. We would be pleased to discuss India’s achievements in each of these fields.

“I’m happy that BRICS has given increasing collaboration in the field of health particular attention. One important move in this manner was the establishment of the BRICS Vaccine R&D Centre in 2022. The ‘BRICS Partnership for Elimination of Socially Determined Diseases’ Leader’s Statement, which was released today, will provide fresh motivation for enhancing our cooperation.

“I want to sincerely thank everyone who took part in today’s insightful and productive conversations. Next year, when India is the BRICS chairperson, we will keep up our close collaboration on all important matters. Redefining BRICS to mean “Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability” is our aim. In the same way that we prioritized the problems of the Global South and promoted inclusivity during our G-20 Presidency, we will progress this forum with a people-centric approach and the attitude of “Humanity First” during our BRICS Presidency,” he continued.

“Once again, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to President Lula on this successful BRICS Summit,” the prime minister said as he wrapped up his speech. Many thanks.
