In addition to promising to strengthen the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin had a “very good and detailed conversation” over the phone on Friday. The two leaders also had in-depth discussions about the situation in Ukraine.
“I had a great, in-depth talk with President Putin, my friend. I expressed my gratitude to him for providing me with the most recent Ukraine news. We also reiterated our commitment to strengthening the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership and assessed the status of our bilateral agenda. Following the phone conversation, PM Modi wrote on X, “I am excited to have President Putin visit India later this year.”
The Prime Minister reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for a peaceful settlement of the Ukraine situation while expressing gratitude to President Putin for his thorough analysis.
The contact was made less than twenty-four hours after Ajit Doval, the National Security Advisor (NSA), visited the Russian President at the Kremlin on Thursday night.
Following US President Donald Trump’s decision to slap further tariffs on India for importing oil from Russia, the crucial meeting took place.
India has called the action “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable” and stated that its imports are determined by market forces and carried out with the ultimate goal of guaranteeing the energy security of its 1.4 billion citizens.
On the Russian side, Yuri Ushakov, the president’s assistant, and Sergei Shoigu, the secretary of the Russian Security Council, also attended the meeting. In addition to NSA Doval, Vinay Kumar, India’s ambassador to Russia, attended the meeting.
As part of their continued commitment to holding yearly summits, President Putin is scheduled to visit India for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit.
“Once a year, our leaders have agreed to meet. It is our turn this time,” Ushakov, a Kremlin aide, had previously stated.
On December 6, 2021, during the 21st India-Russia Annual Summit in New Delhi, the Russian president made his final trip to India.
During the previous year, PM Modi made two high-profile trips to Russia: he attended the 22nd Russia-India Summit in July and then took part in the BRICS Summit in Kazan in October.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had indicated that preparations are underway for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s upcoming visit to India, citing that the political dialogue between India and Russia is “developing dynamically” and that Moscow and New Delhi “have close or even coinciding views on the objectively emerging multipolar world order.”
“There is a long history of relations between our nations. On multiple occasions, they have proven to be resilient. Lavrov told the attendees of the first international conference, “Russia and India: Towards a New Agenda for Bilateral Relations,” which was also attended by External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar in March of this year, that Russia and India are now establishing equal cooperation based on genuine, reciprocal respect and consideration of each other’s interests.
“The role that our leaders have played in this process cannot be overstated. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first bilateral foreign visit to Russia following his reelection last year is significant. It’s our turn now. The invitation from the leader of the Indian government was accepted by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The head of the Russian state is preparing to visit the Republic of India,” he continued.
President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a condolence telegram from the Russian president in June over the Ahmedabad passenger jet disaster.
“Please accept my sincere condolences for the terrible outcomes of the Ahmedabad passenger jet crash. Please express your heartfelt condolences and support to the victims’ families and loved ones, and send your best wishes for a quick recovery to everyone hurt in this tragedy,” Putin stated.
Along with calling Prime Minister Modi in May, President Putin “strongly condemned” the Pahalgam terror assault on April 22 and promised India his “full support” in the country’s continued war against terrorism.
According to a Kremlin statement, Putin conveyed to Prime Minister Modi his deepest sympathies for the loss of Indian compatriots in the savage terrorist assault on April 22 and emphasized the importance of a “uncompromising fight” against terrorism in all its manifestations.
“The strategic importance of the unique, privileged alliance between Russia and India was emphasized during the discussion. The Russian President’s office released a statement that said, “These relations are not susceptible to outside influence and continue to develop dynamically in all directions.”
“For the customary yearly bilateral summit, the Indian leader extended his invitation to the Russian president to come to India. With thanks, the invitation was accepted,” it continued.
Putin had also invited PM Modi to join in the Victory Day festivities, but he was unable to make the trip to Russia.
Prior to this, the Russian president had expressed his sorrow for Prime Minister Modi and President Droupadi Murmu over the terrible events of the Pahalgam terrorist incident.
