In an effort to improve healthcare in the nation and provide access to reasonably priced medications, the Union government opened ten new AMRIT (Affordable Medicines and Reliable Implants for Treatment) pharmacies on Saturday.

At a celebration of the program’s tenth anniversary in the nation’s capital, Union Health Minister JP Nadda opened the pharmacies.

“Since its launch in 2015, the AMRIT network has expanded to over 255 outlets across 24 States and four Union Territories,” Nadda stated, congratulating AMRIT on its ten-year journey to make high-quality medications accessible and reasonably priced nationwide.

PGI Neuroscience Centre in Chandigarh, GMCH Unit-II in Jammu, State Cancer Institute in Jammu, AIIMS Deogarh, Dental Hospital Srinagar, SCTIMST in Trivandrum, Mumbai Port Trust, IIT Jodhpur, AIIMS Gorakhpur, and AIIMS Kalyani Unit 3 are the locations where the new centers will start operating.

“With the goal of providing accessible, affordable, and equitable healthcare facilities to all people in the country, the government launched AMRIT and Jan Aushadi Centers in 2014,” Nadda stated.

He said, “These centers are handling essential medications as well as those ranging from oncology to cardiac care to orthopaedic care and specialized interventions for both medicines and medical devices.”

These stores offer medical devices, life-saving medications, and necessary medications at drastically lower costs—often up to 50% less than the maximum retail price (MRP).

The Minister praised AMRIT’s “50% discount offered on branded medicines covering oncology, cardiology, orthopaedics, and endocrinology, without compromising on quality.”

Over 6.85 crore patients nationwide benefit from the network’s availability of over 6,500 medications and medical supplies.

Over 17,000 crore medications have been distributed through these locations thus far. Over Rs 8,500 crore can be saved by patients over time, he continued.

All AIIMS campuses and other nationally significant institutions have AMRIT pharmacy.

Additionally, Nadda called on HLL Lifecare Limited (HLL), a Ministry of Health and Family Welfare public sector organization, “to double the number of AMRIT outlets to ‘at least 500.”

AMRIT is required for all government, private, and district hospitals. He urged increasing awareness of AMRIT and stated, “It must expand at a rapid rate.”

Nadda also unveiled a Customized My Stamp with India Post and the updated Ecogreen 2.0 digital platform during the ceremony.
