Elon Musk, a Special Government Employee of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has announced his resignation from his position as a senior counselor to US President Donald Trump.
The wealthy businessman, who is also the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, had been assigned to spearhead initiatives to cut unnecessary government spending and simplify the federal bureaucracy.
Musk took to X on Wednesday (US time) to thank the organization for the chance to serve.
“As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” Musk tweeted.
“The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government,” he stated.
Musk made his announcement the day after publicly denouncing the main component of Trump’s legislative program.
The CEO of Tesla voiced dissatisfaction with what Trump refers to as his “big beautiful bill,” which mixes large tax cuts with stricter immigration enforcement, in an interview with CBS.
Musk referred to the proposal as a “massive spending bill,” claiming that it contradicts his department’s objectives.
“It increases the federal deficit and undermines the work of DOGE,” he stated.
“I think a bill can be big or it could be beautiful,” Musk said, making fun of the measure’s branding. However, I’m not sure if it might be both.
Trump briefly addressed reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday in response to Musk’s comments.
Trump acknowledged the difficulties he faced throughout the bill’s negotiation while supporting the law.
He hinted that changes to the bill would still be forthcoming. “I’m not happy about certain aspects of it, but I’m thrilled by other aspects of it,” he added. “We’ll wait and see what occurs. There is still more to be done,” he stated.
