In the face of mounting political uncertainty regarding the tournament’s future in Italy, the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation confirmed Thursday that the ATP Finals will remain hosted in Turin at least until 2026.
The top eight singles and doubles players compete in this esteemed year-end event, which has been held in Turin since 2021 and will make a comeback to the Inalpi Arena in November of this year. Although ATP chairman Andrea Gaudenzi announced last November that the ATP Finals would remain in Italy until 2030, the contract did not specify whether Turin or Milan, where a new ice hockey arena is being built for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, would serve as the host city.
“The ATP Finals will be held in Turin until at least 2026,” the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation’s president, Angelo Binaghi, said in a statement on Thursday. This November and 2026 are the two further editions of the event that will take place at the same venue thanks to the confirmation.
But Binaghi cautioned that a recently proposed government order would threaten the federation’s authority over the competition and force the ATP to reschedule, potentially bringing the Italian chapter to an early conclusion.
In reference to Jannik Sinner’s historic victory at Wimbledon on Sunday, the first by an Italian in men’s singles at the All England Club, Binaghi remarked, “It’s upsetting that this is happening during the greatest moment in the history of Italian tennis.”
Binaghi went on to emphasize the federation’s dedication to maintaining the Finals’ current location by saying, “But we will do everything we can to keep the tournament here.”
The new laws that potentially weaken the Italian federation’s control over major international athletic events like the ATP Finals are the source of the political unrest. The decree’s specifics are yet unknown, but the ambiguity it creates has sparked worries about Turin’s continued viability as the host city after 2026.
After a 12-year run in London, the ATP Finals moved to Turin in 2021. Local support was further strengthened when home favorite Jannik Sinner delighted fans by winning the ATP Finals title in 2024 – a significant milestone that helped ignite a new golden period in Italian tennis. Since then, the city has welcomed the tournament.
